Monitor Problems

Troubleshooting the Monitor
Monitor problems can be varied:

Possible Cause

 

 Power light doesn’t go on Is the monitor turned on?
Is the monitor plugged in?
Does the surge protector/wall outlet work?
Is the monitor fuse blown?
Is the monitor itself defective? Try replacing
with a known good one.
Power light is on but there’s no image Check the brightness adjustment.
Is the monitor cable to the computer secure?
Is the monitor cable to the computer defective?
Check to see that the system configuration is
set correctly.
Is the monitor itself defective? Try replacing
with a known good one.
Reseat the video card.
Trade a known good video card for the
suspected bad one.
Test RAM on the system board with diagnostic
software.
Trade the system board for one that’s known to
be good.
Power is on but monitor displays the wrong
characters
Trade a known good video card for the suspected
bad one.
Trade the system board for one that is known
to be good.
Monitor flickers and/or has wavy lines
If the monitor has a degauss button to eliminate
accumulated electromagnetic fields, press it.
Check for anything near the computer that can
be a source of electrical noise.
Check the refresh rate by right-clicking the desk
top and selecting Properties. If the refresh
rate is below 60 Hz, try using a higher one.

No graphics display or the screen goes blank
when loading certain programs
A graphics or video accelerator card isn’t present
or is defective.
The software isn’t configured to do graphics.
No video display
The built-in video controller on the system
board may be bad. Replacing with a video card
may be difficult if it’s not already set up in
BIOS. You may need to turn off the onboard
video to use an external card, and you can’t do
this unless you’re able to update or reprogram
the BIOS chip.

Screen goes blank 30 seconds to one minute
after the keyboard is left untouched
System is in standby. Hit any key to resume.
